Chapter 4:The Not-So-Sweet Truth about Diabetes

Ask a dozen of your friends, co-workers and neighbors (or, if you’re in an adventurous mood, take an informal poll among strangers on the street), and I bet that you’ll find more than a few of them have diabetes. Like other chronic diseases I’ve talked about so far, diabetes, especially type-2 diabetes, wasn’t very common back in our grandparents’ day. Unfortunately, all that has changed.

Today, diabetes affects at least 35 million people in the United States, with the vast majority being type-2 diabetes. Obesity, which is fueling the spread of diabetes, is becoming more and more prevalent, so much so that it’s been estimated that over 300 million people worldwide will have diabetes by 2025.
